Former concert cellist Louka barely makes ends meet providing accompaniment at funerals after being fired from his job with the Prague Philharmonic. For a contract fee, he marries a Russian woman so she can become a Czech citizen; as planned, she immediately goes off to West Germany, leaving the bachelor with her 5-year-old son, Kolya, who only speaks Russian and some official questions about the sham marriage. The film centres on the slowly growing relationship between Kolya and Louka; it’s a delight!
